The story of … our Belgravia Mews Family Home
How the JLE Studio team worked with our clients to present a full refurbishment, creating a streamlined and beautiful family home
The renovation brief
To maximise the spatial potential across this three-floor home, which involved re-configuring the overall layout of all the rooms, including the staircase. Our clients’ original wishes were to include a new mansard roof extension. However, due to lease matters, this was not possible, so we had to come up with very strong alternative options to provide the desired amount of usable space.
The original home: Belgravia Mews House
Our starting point was a family home within a gated mews, and our clients desired a complete refurbishment. Naturally, they had to move out whilst work was in progress. This meant that our plans and timescales had to be very precise to ensure the entire project could be successfully completed within the specific time frame.
Project considerations
The house is positioned within a gated area and situated very close to a school. Consequently, we were very aware that the entire project had to be undertaken with a high degree of consideration for the surrounding neighbours and community. All parties needed to be informed of planned works at all stages of the build. We were required to provide documentation for works during the whole construction period, to ensure we adhered to the license conditions provided by the estate (landlord and freeholder).
What we did: Bespoke design expertise
We looked at every inch of space and were able to provide ideas for bespoke fitted cabinetry for each of the main rooms. We incorporated bespoke joinery for the living-drawing room, including a hidden cocktail bar and drinks refrigerator. The room has angled walls, and we designed open book and display shelves to embrace these angles. Each bedroom has ample storage space, and there is also a cosy home study area with glazed internal doors. The bathrooms are spacious and also have plentiful bespoke storage.
Unique design features: The details
We wanted to bring more light into the lower ground floor, where the kitchen and dining area was positioned. This was achieved by creating a light well and repositioning the staircase. The results are spectacular, with impressive windows that allow light to flood into the middle of the home. Privacy is maintained with automated blinds. The kitchen area is an enjoyable space, with the main kitchen facilities at a slightly lower level, overlooked by a breakfast bar spot, and leading onward to the family dining space. We worked with our sister interior design partners PERO Designs, to create a cohesive interior palette that flowed throughout the home and which met the aesthetic ambitions of our clients.
The end result: Belgravia Mews family home
This project was always about providing a beautiful and functional family home for our clients. We achieved this to the satisfaction of our clients, thanks to very clear lines of communication at all times, which enabled all concerned to meet the demands of the schedule and the requirements surrounding the property.
